About service:
Essential Lymphatic Edema Management Program
Swelling that won't resolve on its own needs a specialist's protocol. A focused, measurable pathway for lymphatic swelling in the arms or legs — following lymph node removal, cancer treatment, surgery, trauma, recurrent infection, or a primary lymphatic disorder.
About This Program:
At PhysioWell, lymphedema is managed with the precision it demands. The Essential Lymphatic Edema Management Program is a specialist-led pathway for patients living with lymphatic swelling in the upper or lower limbs — whether it followed lymph node removal, cancer treatment (surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy), surgery, trauma, recurrent infections, or a primary disorder of the lymphatic system.
Our goal is threefold: reduce the swelling and improve drainage now, protect the limb from infection and complications over time, and give you the skills to manage the condition independently for the long term. Every session is measured — we track your limb's circumference and volume objectively so reduction is documented, not estimated, and your compression plan is adjusted to exactly where you are.
🔬 Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage & Objective Measurement
The program is built on Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) delivered by a certified specialist, supported by multi-layer compression bandaging and — when clinically indicated — intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). Precise circumferential and volumetric measurements at the start, midpoint, and end of the program mean your progress is quantified, and your compression strategy is tuned to measured results rather than appearance alone.
🗓️ Program Structure
Sessions 1–2 — Assessment & Preparation: Precise measurement of swelling volume and severity, and classification of the edema stage (Grade I / II / III). Full MLD (starting from healthy adjacent lymph nodes to redirect flow), multi-layer compression bandaging, skin-care fundamentals to prevent dryness and cracking, and IPC where indicated.
Sessions 3–4 — Enhance Drainage & Stabilize Volume: Advanced MLD along alternative lymphatic pathways (anastomosis) where nodes have been removed. Decongestive exercises with compression — limb elevation, muscle pumping, and integrated joint movement — with compression reviewed and adjusted to the stage of reduction. Kinesiotaping is used to support drainage between sessions when needed.
Sessions 5–6 — Independence & Long-Term Maintenance: A full review of your self-MLD technique with performance correction, fitting and instruction on compression garments, and final measurements documenting the reduction achieved. You leave with a documented long-term self-maintenance plan and follow-up schedule.
A note on safety: The program is stopped immediately — with medical referral — at any sign of redness, sudden warmth, acute inflammation (cellulitis), or suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Compression is eased for severe pain or discomfort, and the plan is adapted to the type (primary/secondary) and stage of the edema.
